These books take place in the in the early 20th century, in which a which the main character Dr Ransom ( a character much like Lewis) is involved in space travel as well as spiritual powers and battles.
These books are packed full of theology, philosophy and moral ideas. Some of these ideas that Lewis discuses in his other books are seen here in a fiction form, for example man relationship to nature and the universe is common in all the books. These works also mix biblical and classical and medieval ideas and imagery. It comes as no surprise since these were Lewis greatest interests. The first book in particular deals with language another passion of Lewis's. It's also interesting to note that Lewis pushed J. R. R. Tolkien to write Lord of the Rings, while Tolkien pushed Lewis to write these books and you can see the impact of each other on their works. For example, the language of space is similar to a elvish tongue. You can also see many of Lewis's writing styles in these book, just like Narnia in which main characters get phased out. Dr Ransom does not appear in the final book until a more than half way.
I loved reading these books. I took a few medieval lit classes in school and it created an interest in that topic for me, so a mixing of sci-fi and medieval ideas make it very enjoyable. It was also great reading these because they make me thing about things and I normally like reading non-fiction because it make me think. These books mix that thinking and fiction use right. Lewis also does a great job building the main characters and drawing in to them so you want to know what will happen to them. Lewis is one of my favorite author and these books do not disappoint.
So Say We All
